As a major hub city of the Belt and Road Initiative, Chengdu—with its geographic advantages and open business environment—provided an ideal setting for the forum. The successful event not only marked a new milestone in China–Spain economic cooperation but also sent a positive signal to global economic recovery.

Under the theme “Innovation, Green Development, and Cooperation,” the forum featured three sector-specific sub-forums, thematic roundtables, and one-on-one B2B matchmaking sessions, forming a full-cycle cooperation mechanism. Both sides shared technological strengths and business need in renewable energy, smart manufacturing, and precision agriculture. A total of 10 cooperation agreements were signed, covering food exports, photovoltaic and wind power development, and the establishment of joint R&D laboratories in industrial technology.

At the closing ceremony, the Spanish Embassy in China reaffirmed its commitment to expanding platforms for bilateral cooperation, supporting more Spanish companies in entering the Chinese market and welcoming Chinese investments in Spain. CCPIT stated that it would continue to promote practical cooperation under the Belt and Road framework following the momentum of the forum.

The forum not only advanced business cooperation but also strengthened people-to-people connections. In Chengdu — a city known for openness and inclusiveness — Chinese and Spanish enterprises planted the seeds of collaboration, which will undoubtedly yield fruitful results and contribute positively to global peace and development.

LONGi, a global leader in solar technology, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with SM Advance Energy to govern the development of its solar energy projects in the Canary Islands and the Atlantic African region, including the Gran Canaria Solar Energy Technology Park (ESGC), with SM Advance Energy acting as project partner and operator.

This initiative will serve as a dynamic platform for showcasing photovoltaic innovation, integrating agrivoltaic systems, and furthering sustainability-driven research using LONGi’s latest technology offerings.

The ESGC Technology Park, situated in Gran Canaria, will feature the full portfolio of LONGi’s advanced module technologies—Hi‑MO 7, X10 and the newly unveiled Hi‑MO S10. The project will deploy 22 MW of TopCon BC 2.0 and 3.0 modules across multiple zones, demonstrating the latest breakthroughs in photovoltaic efficiency and performance.

At the heart of the project lies the Hi‑MO S10, also known as EcoLife Pro, which is LONGi’s first commercial-grade module utilizing Heterojunction Back Contact (HBC) technology. By combining HJT passivation benefits with the efficiency of back-contact cell design, the S10 achieves up to 27.3% cell efficiency and 25% module efficiency, delivering up to 510 W output at 250 W/m² power density. Enhanced by LONGi’s TaiRay wafers and bipolar rear passivation, the S10 offers 16% higher mechanical resilience and a 39% reduction in hotspot temperatures compared to TopCon, coupled with a 30-year product and performance warranty.

Zone PTESGC‑4 of the park will deploy the Hi‑MO S10 72HJD in a 5 MW bifacial ground-mounted installation—marking its first use in the Canary Islands. Spanning 38,460 m² of rocky terrain (Type A, B, and C), this zone is dedicated solely to photovoltaic generation without agrivoltaic integration.

Other park sectors will integrate agrivoltaic systems to support sustainable agriculture:

PTESGC‑1: 56,900 m² for aloe vera, 1,200 m² greenhouse for vegetables, 400 m² vertical farming, 438 m² tropical fruit agritracking, 413 m² banana and cucumber structures.

PTESGC‑2: 42,282 m² allocated for livestock grazing.

PTESGC‑4.II: 17,552 m² for aromatic and medicinal plants.

PTESGC‑5: 51,794 m² combining aloe vera with floral species.

Timeline & Scope:

2025: Procurement and preparatory engineering work.

2026: Installation and construction in key zones.

2027: Completion of all zones, grid connection, and energy injection.

“This project presents an exceptional opportunity for LONGi to showcase our full range of technologies within one initiative,” said Hugo Fernández, Managing Director of LONGi Solar DG for Southern Europe.

Charles Jiang, Global Vice President of LONGi Solar DG, remarked: “The ESGC Technology Park is a strategic milestone for LONGi in Europe. It not only reinforces our technological leadership in photovoltaics but also perfectly aligns with the EU’s climate objectives and Spain’s energy transition agenda.”

Santiago Marrero, Chairman of the ESGC Technology Park, added: “Through our alliance with LONGi, we aim to redefine solar energy’s role in the Canary Islands—not just as a power source but as a driver of ecological innovation, economic diversification, and educational engagement.”

On December 16, 2024, the Chinese Ambassador to Spain, Mr. Yao Jing, visited the cities of Mieres and Langreo in Asturias. The visit aimed to promote foreign cooperation, with a particular focus on renewable energy, the digital industry, and tourism, fostering deeper economic and trade exchanges between China and Spain.

Mieres and Langreo are actively seeking industrial investments from China. Ambassador Yao Jing met with the mayors and key political representatives of the two cities to gain firsthand insights into the strategies for economic diversification and industrial transformation being pursued by the local governments.

Positioning themselves as attractive territories for future investments, Mieres and Langreo offer excellent infrastructure, including modern airports, seaports, and high-speed rail networks, along with extensive industrial estates that provide favorable conditions for company establishment and growth.

During the visit, Ambassador Yao also toured the Barredo University Campus, a hub for research focusing on environmental studies, artificial intelligence, energy transition, and industrial heritage. The campus serves as a significant platform for exploring future collaboration in science and technology.

Since assuming office earlier this year, Ambassador Yao Jing has been actively promoting China-Spain bilateral relations. In an article titled “Fifty Years Walking Together, Achieving Even More in the New Era”, published at the beginning of the year, Ambassador Yao highlighted the strong commonalities between the two nations and the steady progress in economic and commercial cooperation.

He noted that China is Spain’s fifth-largest trading partner and its largest outside the European Union. In 2023, bilateral trade exceeded $50 billion for the first time. Spain has participated in the China International Import Expo for six consecutive years, showcasing agricultural and food products such as pork, Iberian ham, and olive oil, which have garnered significant attention. Additionally, Spanish beauty products, textiles, and clothing have gained popularity among Chinese consumers, while Spanish machine tools are experiencing growth in the Chinese market. Ambassador Yao also mentioned the success of the Yiwu-Madrid train, which has operated more than 1,500 times, transporting approximately 120,000 TEUs with a total cargo value of $6 billion. This route has become a symbol of cooperation under the Belt and Road Initiative, reflecting the growing economic ties between China and Spain, as well as between China and Europe.

Looking ahead, Ambassador Yao emphasized the importance of planning bilateral relations with a strategic perspective, adhering to the principle of mutual benefits, and fostering deeper cooperation in a practical and meaningful way. He expressed his commitment to rooting China-Spain friendship in the hearts of the people and elevating the comprehensive strategic partnership to a new level.

WCHAM leader Mr. Orencio Grela was invited to attend the event and met with the Ambassador and his delegation. He highly praised Ambassador Yao Jing, describing him as a leader full of charisma and vision. He remarked, “Under Ambassador Yao’s leadership, any cooperative project can become a tangible and beautiful blueprint, injecting greater confidence and momentum into the collaboration between China and Spain.”
