The Mayor of Langreo Spain to Visit China

The Mayor of Langreo, Roberto Marcos García, will travel to the People’s Republic of China this week to “identify opportunities for collaboration and attract potential investments.” García will participate in the China-Spain Mayoral Dialogue, which will take place on April 24 and 25 2025 in Chongqing, one of the largest cities in China. The theme of the forum is “Sharing governance wisdom, co-creating resilient cities.”
The event is co-organized by the Chinese People’s Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries, the Chongqing Municipal People’s Government, and the Cátedra China Foundation. It will bring together municipal leaders, business figures, and diplomats from both countries. According to municipal sources, the aim of the visit is to strengthen international relations and position Langreo as a global benchmark of technological innovation.
Last December, García’s agenda included meetings with Yang Wanming, President of the Chinese People’s Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries, and Vice Minister Ma Hui from the International Department of the Communist Party of China. During his visit to Langreo, Chinese Ambassador to Spain Yao Jing expressed strong interest in the industrial parks of Langreo, particularly the former Nitrastur facilities.
“We have confirmed that Spain has a very solid industrial base in Asturias, along with qualified human resources and an advanced training system,” the ambassador stated.

During the upcoming visit to China, Mayor García is scheduled to meet with Hu Henghua, the Mayor of Chongqing—a city of over 32 million residents.
In Langreo, numerous business and industrial centers remain underutilized. These include areas such as ModestaEl Cadavíu, and plots in various phases of the La Moral industrial estate.
The municipality is also promoting new industrial development on the former Iberdrola thermal power plant site and the Nitrastur plot, the latter being evaluated for an armored vehicle manufacturing plant.
The Chinese ambassador’s visit to Langreo and Mieres in December underscored a growing interest in the region’s industrial legacy and land availability, marking it as a potential hub for Chinese investment.
This comes amid a broader context of warming commercial and political ties, especially after the recent visit of Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez to China.
